How to Plaster a Wall Professionally: Tools, Tips, and Techniques

They want to know whether they can do this themselves, and what the process genuinely involves. The honest answer is: some of it, yes. Some of it, no.

What Is Wall Plastering?

Plastering is the process of applying a material layer to an internal wall or ceiling to create a smooth, even surface ready for paint or wallpaper. It fills imperfections, covers damaged or exposed areas, and gives the wall a finished face that holds decoration properly. Without it, a wall is rough, uneven, and unsuitable for any decorative treatment.

What Plaster Does to a Wall

A coat of plaster creates a hard, breathable skin over the wall substrate. It bonds to the background material beneath and gives the room a clean internal face. In older York properties, this layer is often the only thing between the internal room and rough masonry or historic lime render behind it.

The most common reasons to replaster are water damage, crumbling old plaster that has lost adhesion, or renovation work that has stripped a surface back to bare brick or plasterboard. 

In some cases, previous poor repairs leave a wall with patches, varying suction levels, and an uneven background that needs rebuilding from scratch before any finish coat can be applied.

Plastering is an internal process. Rendering is the equivalent external treatment applied to outside walls using a cement or lime-based mix.

What Is the Difference Between a Skim Coat and Full Plaster?

This is the question most DIY guides skip over. They assume you already know which system you need. Getting this wrong means either unnecessary extra work or a result that does not last.

Full Plastering (Two-Coat System)

Full plastering means applying two separate layers: 

  1. An undercoat and 
  2. A finish coat. 

The undercoat is a thicker backing layer, typically 8mm, that builds up the surface and levels it across the full wall. The finish coat, usually Thistle MultiFinish, goes over the top at just 1 to 2mm. 

This system is used when plastering onto bare brick, raw blockwork, or concrete. It is also the correct choice when old plaster has been removed and the background is fully exposed. 

A single skim coat applied directly to bare brick will not bond correctly and will crack as it dries.

Skim Coat (Finish Coat Only)

A skim coat is a thin application of finish plaster, typically 2mm or less, applied directly over an existing surface that is already sound and flat. This could be over plasterboard on a new partition wall, over old plaster that remains firmly bonded, or over a backing coat that has already set. 

Thistle MultiFinish and Thistle BoardFinish are the two most commonly used products for this stage in UK residential work. 

A skim coat assumes the background is flat and stable. If it is not, the skim will not correct it.

One-Coat Plaster

One-coat plaster is a thicker combined product designed for repairs and patches rather than full-room work. 

Products like Gyproc Easi-Fill cover small damaged areas where a full two-coat system is unnecessary. They will not give a trade-quality finish over an entire wall and are not intended to.

The right system is one part of the decision. The right product for the specific wall behind it is equally important.

What Type of Plaster Should You Use on Your Wall?

The plaster product must match the background material. This is the mistake most DIYers make, and it is why many replastering jobs fail within the first year.

Bare Brick or Blockwork

Bare brick is a high-suction background. It pulls moisture out of fresh plaster very quickly, causing the mix to set before it can be properly worked. 

Thistle HardWall is the standard undercoat choice for medium-to-high suction backgrounds. It is applied at an 11mm thickness and keyed with a devil float before the finish coat goes on. 

On very high-suction brick, lightly dampening the surface before application slows the moisture loss and extends the working time.

Old Plaster Backgrounds

Old plaster in sound condition can often be skimmed directly, provided it is clean, well-bonded, and free of hollow sections. A tap test across the surface reveals any loose areas by producing a hollow sound. 

Those sections must be removed before any new plaster is applied. Once the background is confirmed sound, PVA at a 1:3 ratio or a blue grit product like Thistle Bond-It creates the key needed for the new skim to grip.

Plasterboard Surfaces

Fresh plasterboard has low suction and a paper face. Thistle BoardFinish is specified for this background, though Thistle MultiFinish also performs well on plasterboard. 

No undercoat is needed. Scrim tape applied over all joints before skimming prevents cracking along the seams. 

Plasterboard is one of the more consistent backgrounds for beginners to work on and is a practical surface for building trowel technique.

Painted Walls

A painted surface has very little suction for fresh plaster to grip. The solution is to create a mechanical key by sanding or scoring the surface. Then, apply PVA or blue grit. Gloss paint in particular must be thoroughly abraded before any primer goes on.

Damp or High-Suction Walls

Standard gypsum plaster should never go onto a wall with active damp. Gypsum is soluble and degrades when exposed to ongoing moisture from behind. 

For walls that have received damp treatment, a specialist damp-resistant undercoat such as Thistle Dri-Coat should be used before any finish plaster is applied. Treat the damp first, confirm it is resolved, then plaster.

What Tools Do You Need to Plaster a Wall?

The quality of tools makes a real difference. A cheap finishing trowel with a rigid or uneven blade makes a smooth result extremely difficult, regardless of technique.

The mixing bucket and drill paddle are more important than most beginners realise. Plaster must be mixed at a slow speed to avoid introducing air into the mix. 

A 25-litre bucket gives enough room to mix a full batch without the material climbing the sides. Keep a second bucket of clean water nearby to rinse the trowel constantly during application.

Application and Smoothing Tools

The hawk and trowel combination takes time to become comfortable with. Load the hawk from the bucket, then transfer a manageable amount onto the wall with the finishing trowel held at roughly 30 degrees. 

Too steep, and the plaster drops off the blade. Too flat and it will not spread cleanly. A clean trowel produces a cleaner surface, which is why professional plasterers rinse their tools throughout the job rather than leaving dried material to build up.

Finishing and Polishing Tools

The devil float is used between the undercoat and finish coat stages to create a mechanical grip in the surface. During polishing, the finishing trowel is used again at a very low angle with light, consistent pressure.

How to Plaster a Wall in 8 Easy Steps

Step-by-step wall plastering process for smooth interior wall finishing

This is the process a professional plasterer in York would follow from start to finish. Each step matters, and the sequence cannot be changed.

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Cover the floor with canvas dust sheets and remove furniture that cannot be covered. Take off loose plaster, flaking material, and anything not firmly bonded to the wall using a bolster chisel and hammer where needed. 

Fill any holes deeper than 10mm separately with a suitable filler before plastering begins. Plaster is a surface material, not a void filler.

Sound Substrate

Tap across the entire wall with your knuckles before any prep work begins. A hollow sound means the plaster behind has lost its bond. 

Those sections must come off entirely before new material goes on. Plastering over a hollow patch results in that section cracking away from the wall within months.

Step 2: Apply PVA or Bonding Primer

Mix PVA at a 1:3 ratio, one part PVA to three parts clean water. Apply the first coat across the full wall with a brush or roller and allow it to dry completely. Apply a second coat at the same ratio. 

Begin plastering when the surface is tacky but not fully dry. 

That tacky stage is the bonding window. If the PVA dries past tacky and turns transparent and glossy, the bond is gone, and another coat is needed before work can begin.

Blue Grit as an Alternative

Thistle Bond-It, known on site as blue grit, creates a better mechanical key than PVA alone and is the preferred professional choice on low-suction or painted surfaces. 

It is brushed on and left for a full 24 hours before any plaster is applied. On old painted or sealed walls, it outperforms PVA consistently.

Step 3: Mix the Plaster

Add clean water to the bucket first, approximately 14 litres per 25kg bag of Thistle plaster. Add the powder to the water gradually while the paddle runs at a slow speed. 

The target consistency is thick yoghurt: smooth, heavy, and completely lump-free. Do not add more powder once the mix is complete, and never re-mix plaster that has started to go off.

Batch Size

Mix only what you can use in 20 to 30 minutes. A full 25kg bag of Thistle MultiFinish covers roughly 10 square metres at 2mm thickness. 

For larger walls, work in batches so the mix is always fresh. 

A contaminated bucket from a previous batch causes the new mix to begin setting faster than expected, which is one of the most common causes of a rushed and uneven finish.

Step 4: Apply the Undercoat (Bonding Coat)

Load the hawk from the bucket using the bucket trowel. Transfer plaster from the hawk to the wall with the finishing trowel in upward, overlapping strokes. 

Start from the bottom left corner and work across the wall, maintaining a wet edge throughout. 

The target thickness for a BondingCoat application is 8mm. Once the wall is covered, run a straight edge or aluminium rule across the surface to identify high spots and flatten them off.

Wet Edge Technique

A wet-edge to wet-edge technique means each new stroke overlaps slightly with the fresh section beside it. 

If one area is left to partially set before the next section is applied, a visible join line appears on the finished wall. 

Rinse the trowel in the clean water bucket regularly so dried plaster on the blade does not drag and pull the fresh surface.

Step 5: Key the Undercoat

Once the bonding coat has firmed but not set fully, typically one and a half to two hours after application, depending on temperature and suction, run the devil float across the surface in overlapping circular motions. 

This scratches a series of shallow grooves into the surface for the finish coat to grip onto. This step is not optional. 

A smooth, unkeyed undercoat significantly reduces adhesion and increases the risk of the finish coat delaminating in the months after completion.

The Going-Off Stage

A firm thumb press that leaves a clean impression without slumping or crumbling means the plaster is ready for keying. The surface colour will have started to darken slightly as drying begins. 

At this point, the material holds its shape but is still workable with the devil float.

Step 6: Apply the Finish Coat

Once the undercoat is fully set (BondingCoat typically sets around 200 minutes at room temperature), apply Thistle MultiFinish at 1 to 2mm thickness. 

Work in the same direction as the undercoat. Two passes cover the wall: the first applies coverage, the second pulls the surface flat. Work quickly. 

The finish coat dries faster than the undercoat, and a warm or well-ventilated room shortens the working time significantly.

Two-Pass Method

The first pass distributes plaster evenly across the surface. The second pass, carried out immediately after, uses a flatter trowel angle to pull out ridges and bring the surface level. 

For walls being skimmed without an undercoat, over plasterboard or sound old plaster, these two passes are the only application stage before polishing begins.

Step 7: Polish to a Smooth Finish

After 10 to 15 minutes from the first application, the finish coat will begin to firm. Go back across the wall with the finishing trowel using long, sweeping strokes at a very low angle and light pressure.

If the plaster starts to drag on the blade, mist the surface lightly with the spray bottle and continue. 

Repeat the polishing passes every 10 minutes until the surface is smooth to the touch and free of trowel lines.

The Polishing Window

The workable window for polishing is typically 30 to 45 minutes from first application, varying with temperature and coat thickness. 

Too early, and the trowel sinks in and tears the surface. Too late, and the plaster has set past the point where it can be worked, leaving drag lines that cannot be removed. 

Reading the surface as it firms is what separates a professional finish from a DIY one, and it comes with practice.

Step 8: Allow to Dry Fully Before Painting

Fresh plaster dries from a deep pink through to a consistent pale cream colour. That colour change is the most reliable indicator that the wall is ready for the next stage. Do not paint until the entire surface has reached that uniform cream tone.

Drying Without Damage

Do not use a fan heater, dehumidifier, or direct heat source to accelerate drying. Rapid drying pulls moisture from the plaster too quickly and causes shrinkage cracks across the surface. 

Open windows, allow natural airflow through the room, and let the wall dry at its own pace.

Following these steps precisely is the only way to achieve a flawless, professional finish. Plastering is a skill that blends timing with physical technique, and rushing any stage will show on your final wall.

What Are the Most Common Plastering Mistakes?

  • Skipping the PVA or bonding primer on a high-suction wall, causing the plaster to dry too fast and crack before it can be polished

  • Using a mixing bucket contaminated with set material from a previous batch, which causes early and uneven setting in the new mix

During application:

When Should You Call a Professional Plasterer in York?

Plastering is a skill that develops over time, and a first attempt on a small utility room wall is very different from replastering a Victorian living room with high ceilings, deep alcoves, and a lime-based background.

Situations where a professional is the right choice:
